Thinking about hosting a playgroup?

We can help!

“Play is the highest form of research” — Albert Einstein

At ECMS, our early learning centres and kindergartens take a play-based approach to learning, because play is how children explore, connect, and make sense of the world. We already host playgroups at some of our services, and we’re keen to host more. If you’re a community organisation, council, school, neighbourhood house or local service looking to strengthen support for families, we’d love to partner with you. Because playgroups are a powerful bridge into early learning, built around families, community and belonging.

A great example is Koomail Little Explorers at Koomail Tardy Community Centre in Truganina. Set up and supported by the centre’s Community Liaison Officer, Erica (also known as Aunty E by the children!), Little Explorers has grown into a thriving playgroup for children aged three and under, welcoming 12 families this year, with a waitlist. For many families in this diverse community, it’s one of the main places to connect with other adults and children, especially when extended family isn’t nearby. Being centrally located (and within walking distance for many) makes it easy to attend, and the co-located maternal and child health service helps families find it early.

The session runs for two hours and stays relaxed and flexible. Our early learning teacher Lisa supports the first hour with simple group experiences like music, movement and story time, sometimes joined by community partners such as a rhyme time session or a pop-up library visit. The second hour is family-led with plenty of time for play, chatting, sharing and building friendships. Over time, carers have formed strong bonds, organised catchups outside playgroup, and shared cultural celebrations (and incredible food!) together.

Playgroups also create a natural pathway into kindergarten and school. At Koomail Tardy’s recent 3- and 4-year-old kindergarten open day, around 30 families attended, boosted by playgroup families spreading the word to friends and neighbours. It’s a powerful reminder that playgroups don’t just support children’s development - they build community.

And you don’t have to do it alone. ECMS can support with setup and practical guidance to help get a playgroup running well.
