Seamless Transitions at Maribyrnong River Children’s Centre

Maribyrnong River Children’s Centre (MRCC) is known for its deep commitment to nurturing children from as young as ten weeks through to five years. Nominated Supervisor Funda, a highly experienced educator who has been part of the MRCC family for over 20 years, sheds light on the multi-aged centre's approach to early childhood education, and the importance of a smooth transition for children as they progress through different stages of their early learning.

At MRCC, the philosophy is simple yet profound: “Every child is different, so we need to adapt to their needs,” Funda explains. This child-centred approach is supported by a strong sense of community among the 25-member team, who share the vision of creating a welcoming, family-like atmosphere. “We often reassure families that we are there to support them”, she adds, emphasising the deep bond that forms between the educators and the children.

A key aspect of MRCC's approach is the internal transitioning of children from one room to another as they grow and develop. The process is flexible and carefully considered to make it as smooth and responsive as possible for both the children and their families.  The transition process begins with open communication between educators and families, discussing the child's capabilities and readiness to move to the next, more challenging room. “We try to move groups up together, so children always have a familiar face with them,” Funda notes, highlighting the importance of maintaining friendships during transitions.

MRCC also uses social stories as part of the transition process. These stories include photos of the new environment, educators, and clear visuals such as where to put their lunch or bag, helping the child visualise their new environment before moving. Families are encouraged to read these stories at home, providing additional comfort and familiarity for the child.

The centre also offers a flexible orientation program for new families, allowing them to transition their child to the new environment gradually. This includes observing their child in the room, meeting educators, and adjusting orientation times based on their child's needs. “We try to be flexible for families and work with them to transition in a meaningful and responsive way” Funda says, understanding that each child joins us at their own pace.

The success of this approach is evident in the positive feedback MRCC receives from families. Funda shares a recent example of a family who moved from a non-ECMS service where their child struggled to settle in. At MRCC, the child quickly felt safe and transitioned and is now happy and excited to attend kindergarten—a testament to the centre's commitment to creating a safe and nurturing environment.

For Funda and the team at MRCC, supporting a child through these transitions is about more than just moving rooms. It’s about building confidence that will carry them through life. “If we privilege that confidence from day one, it will become part of them and transition into adulthood,” she reflects. This belief drives the team’s dedication to giving every child the best possible start and setting them up for success for lifelong learning.
