A smooth start begins with relationships

Being 'with' Children

A new term is more than a date on the calendar. For some children it’s a happy return to familiar faces and routines. For others, it’s their very first goodbye at the gate, a big moment in early childhood education and early learning. Families can feel proud and hopeful, and sometimes a little wobbly too.

At ECMS, a smooth start to kindergarten (kinder) and childcare begins with relationship. Children arrive already connected to family, culture, language, community and Country. Before they can explore play-based learning with confidence, they need to feel safe, known and that they belong as they begin to settle.

In the early days, the most important work is simply being with children - calm, steady and emotionally present. That means noticing feelings, naming them gently, and offering reassurance when things feel uncertain. With predictable rhythms, warm responses and a strong educator–family partnership, children build trust and settle in their own time.

A smooth start is something we create together. When families feel welcomed and respected, children feel it too, and that’s when curiosity, joy and learning can really grow across our early learning services.
